So I haven’t been sexually active or so much as kissed anyone for 4/5 years. Was celibate and completely avoiding dating.
The last time I was tested was 4/5 yrs ago in a previous relationship. My partner and I were both given a 10 panel std test and came up negative for everything including hsv 1.
Recently I decided I wanted to get back into dating and decided to get tested again just because. I tested w/ Quest Diagnostics on 6/18/21 and came up negative for everything except HSV 1. My igg index was 1.53. At the time, i consulted the physician available thru the testing service, whom told me it was either a recent infection or a false positive and to test again in 2 months.
I tested again at Quest 3 weeks later anyway, still positive and a little higher at 2.04 igg
I’m really lost here bc I know I havent done anything remotely sexual for years so this being genital seems out the window and at least in the age of covid, have not kissed anyone outside of my mother whom I have been kissing my entire life. Sharing cups utensils also not something i regularly do.
However, a week before my first positive test on 6/10/21, i did share a marijuana joint with a friend. I do not know if they are HSv positive and I did not see any lesions or anything that looked like a cold sore on them.
1. I know there are chances and this strain of hsv is so common, but from what I understand most transmissions happen via sex or kissing correct? So considering this how likely is it possible this sharing of a joint is the recent infection? I literally cannot think of anything else. Would antibodies show up (1.53) a week later?
2. I have had no symptoms whatsoever on top of all of this, so in your opinion how likely is this a false positive with all the info I’ve given?
Any feedback is appreciated. Thank you!

Just want to add if it matters:
Last type of sexual contact/mouth to mouth kissing was 2016/2017. Also tested then negative as well as then partner.
Kissing w my mother is always on the cheek. I dont believe she is positive, i have also never seen a cold sore on her or any of my family members.
I have never had a cold sore or tested positive before this year as well.
Since positive test, no symptoms, no outbreaks.

I believe that this could well be a false positive result on the HSV 1 IgG test. I don’t believe that sharing a joint is the source of a new infection. You should obtain the western blot either by working with your own provider and the UW lab or with me. Either is fine but it sounds like you are concerned enough about this to want to best answer possible.

Thanks for responding Terri.
I’d like to schedule an appointment with you in August, but I don’t see any available dates on the calender for the whole month?

I just opened appointments on August 10. Hope that date works for you.
