Hello,
I am waiting on results from an IGG test for HSV 1 and 2 (will update when recieved). I fordyce spots / visible oil glands on my upper lip. Three spots on the upper lip on the right side recently became raised (for about a month), and then a week and a half ago, one of them started to look like a pimple and increased in size. They were not on the vermillion boarder, but directly in the center of the upper lip. I went to the dermatologist and she said it didn’t look like a cold sore, asked if I felt any tingling, burning or pain (I did not) and thought it was inflamed fordyce spots. She tested me for staph as a possible cause for irritation, and I was positive (took Mupriocin). The inflamed spot hardened and peeled off like a scab (small red mark left). It never blistered or weeped fluid, but the fact that it hardened and peeled off seems like a cold sore to me.
I am seeking an IGG test because I am worried about spreading the virus to my girlfriend, either orally or genitally. She wants to continue a relationship, but definitely does not want herpes. If I am positive, I want to protect her as much as possible. We have abstained from kissing or oral sex durning this potential outbreak, and if I am positive, I plan to get on daily antivirals.
My initial question is:
What is the level of risk of spreading HSV 1 to her (either orally or genitally) when I am not having an outbreak, and on daily antivirals? I have read OHSV1 sheds a lot (25%), but that the transmission rate is unknown. Because of the lack of info, I am having a hard time determining the risk factor in any meaningful way, and would really appreciate your perspective.
If indeed you have HSV 1 orally, which doesn’t sound like it to me from your description, but you certainly could have it anyway, there is some risk in you giving her oral sex. Oral herpes does shed, but the 25% is for people who have six or more outbreaks in a year.
Did you get your test results back yet?
Terri
