After having no sexual partner for a few years, I had a few protected sex and met someone I would have a long term relationship with. After having a few unprotected sex, he told me that I gave him Herpes. I was shocked. I didn’t have any issues with the partners I had in the past and I had no symptoms whatsoever.
I went in for the IgG tests and I got negative for HSV-2 but high positive for HSV-1 at 26.90. I haven’t even had a cold sore as far as I remember so I could have gotten it from someone else but I have no symptoms whatsoever.
My question is, do I need to take any medications? I could have had it for a long time and didn’t even know. I may not have found out for the rest of my life if my partner had some symptoms and realized that he contracted herpes. I am not experiencing any outbreak or anything at all.

Was your partner’s herpes outbreak typed (HSV 1 or 2)? Your partner also could have been infected for years and didn’t know it and if he has HSV 2, you didn’t give it to him.
If you want to reduce the risk of infecting another person, you could take daily antiviral medicine. However, we cannot know if your infection is oral or genital unless you have an outbreak that can be swab tested to confirm that it is herpes.

Hi Terri,
Thanks for the response. I don’t know what he has; he was so upset when he texted me and he hasn’t talked to me since then. I don’t know if he actually got tested either and I’m assuming that he was having some sort of symptom. He told me about a week after we had sex for the second time and a little over 2 weeks after the first one. We had both oral and vaginal sex.
Are there different antiviral medicine for oral and genital herpes?

The medicine is the same for both oral and genital herpes though the dosing frequency and amount is different when taken for outbreaks only.

Thanks again. So even though I don’t know the location of the herpes, can I still take the antiviral to prevent the possible outbreak?

Yes, you certainly can. It is effect regardless of the location of the infection
