Hi had unprotected sex with a previous partner on the 31st July – had no symptoms but as I was ashamed as I am in a relationship for the sake of my and my actual partners health I got tested . The first test on the 23rd august showed positive igm hsv 1&2 and I have done a second test on the 3rd September which has come back positive for igm hsv 1&2 again and cmv igm and igg positive ( I was aware of the cmv for many years ) is there a chance rhe cmv is cross reacting with the hsv 1&2 igm as I have no symptoms at all and hsv 1 and hsv 2 igg remain negative . I had a previous igm score years ago that never converted to igg as I suffer with ebstein bar virus flair ups too. Please guid me if you feel this may be a false positive for hsv ?

The igM test is useless and the CDC says never to use it due to high rates of false positives and the inability to distinguish HSV 1 from HSV 2 from other herpes viruses. The only test you should pay attention to is the IgG test. ARe you saying that you have a positive IgG for HSV 1 and 2? What are the index values you obtained? If you have no index values, you need to find a test that does give index values, like Quest or labCorp. Both of these IgG test from these companies also have false positives on the IgG test.

No igg positives they have only been igm positives and igg negatives . How long would it take before antibodies seroconvert to igg readings . Also would the cmv igm and igg have any impact on my hsv igm testing or vice versa ??

Also despite no symptoms my gyne has done a pcr swab of my cervix to make sure I am not shedding the virus internally .

That’s fine, was it negative?
Seroconversion via IgG can take up to 12 weeks, but usually by 10 weeksTerri

Is it possible that the cmv positive igm and positive igg is cross reacting with the hsv 1/2 igm – I have had cmv for years – my concer n is that the cmv igm is false postive due to the hsv igm positivity ? But I know it can be vice versa

Sorry just to add to the above / I had no symptoms until yesterday I have very heavy sore legs consistently for two days and what feels like thrush but not persistent .

We don’t know why the IgM test produces so many false positives. Heavy sore legs are not a symptom of herpes, nor is thrush in the mouth.

Hi Terri – sorry just to clarify the thrush is not oral it is vaginal – and my swab for bv and Candida came back negative but I am still experiencing it /
Secondly ; I found out today that the person I had unprotected text with his partner tested postive for hsv2 3 months ago . Is it likely based off my 2 igm postive results that he has it ? I have paid for him to do an igg test tomorrow so I am hoping it comes back negative . But if he is positive wasnt showing symptoms and I slept with him unprotected one night – is it obvious that I now more than likely have hsv 2 ? Sorry for all the information .

So you have a yeast infection. Or at least had one.
The IgM really doesn’t help us at all. How did his IgG test come out?
If you had unprotected intercourse with him only once, the risk of you becoming infected is really quite low.
The CMV is not causing the test is to be reactive, but we don’t know why the IgM is so inaccurate.
Only IgG testing is useful.Terri

First, about half the population has HSV 1 infection – exceedingly common, and most is oral, in the form of cold sores. However, some people have HSV 1 genitally. If they do, it is rarely shed and rarely presents as an outbreak and I think most experts would agree that transmission via intercourse is extremely unlikely.
I’ve told you that the igM test is useless and should not have been done and CMV has nothing to do with this.
I don’t think have need to worry about this.
