Hello. My last relationship was 4 months a go. I went to my school lab and I asked them for STD blood test, and everything came back negative except HSV2 came out positive at 1.52 IGG type specific. By the way they only tested me for 2 not both. After 2 days I retested at the same lab all of them came back positive for 1 and for 2, but type 2 came out 1.24. After a week I went to different lab ( lapcorp) I had type 2 blood test IGG type specific and the result came out the next day type 2 negative, but type 1 was positive. By the way I never have any outbreak or rash or any kind of symptoms. So please if anyone can tell me which one should I trust the most?
The last time I had sex was 4 months a go it was protected sex.
Thank you. -

You are testing in what we call the “low positive” range – that is any value greater than 1.1(the cutoff for positive) and 3.5. Most of the time, a person with an index value of greater than 3.5 will confirm when compared to herpes western blot, the gold standard for herpes testing. If you were our patient, we would order a herpes western blot antibody test for you. Our clinic can order you a western blot to be drawn at a Quest lab near where you live if you want to do that. The odds are 85% that this is a false positive test for you (the two positives)

Thank you.
But after a week I retested HSV 2 at labcorp came back negative. I it was type specific IGG. So should I trust labcorp result. The last time I had sex was 17 weeks a go. No outbreak. -

I think it is very likely that you are negative. If you had done the LabCorp test we would not be having this discussion, would we? I can’t guarantee you that you are negative, but I think there is a very high likelihood that you are.

Thank you so much for that.
Because I can not have the western blot test. Can I rely on LabCorp result after 17 weeks, and move one with my life. By the way HSV 1 was in both labs positive. So that means I have it but I never have any outbreaks, but I feel sometimes something going one with my lips like Tingling and burning. But no outbreak. Could I have type 1 orally and never have an outbreak? Does type 1 orally bad or can cause serious problems if I did not take any medicine for it.
Thank you so much. -

If you had only had the LabCorp test, we would not be having this discussion, right? I can’t tell you 100% that you don’t have HSV 2 but I think the likelihood is really low, let’s put it that way.
If you have never had a cold sore or a genital lesion, we cannot know exactly where your HSV 1 infection is. If you have received oral sex in your lifetime, you have a chance of having genital HSV 1 so we can’t rule that out completely. If you have any symptoms in either location like a sore, please have it checked out and swab tested. Remember that more than 1/2 the population between 14 and 49 has HSV 1 infection so it is likely that you will encounter another person who has HSV 1 in your sexual lifetime and then you will not pass it back and forth, regardless of location.Terri
