My new partner has had HSV-2 Herpetic for about 8 years. He said he has only had outbreaks on his hand, but never his mouth or genitals. He has anti viral medication he takes as needed if he’s getting outbreaks, but as far as I know, there haven’t been any recent outbreaks. As far as I am aware, it’s only contagious when there are active legions present on the hand.
Initially, he didn’t know it was herpes until a blood test was done; I don’t know if he inadvertently touched his mouth or genitals during an outbreak before he knew what it was. My question is, what’s the likelihood of the HSV-2 being contracted through his mouth or genitals/having the HSV-2 in more than one part of the body?
So we know that 95% of people who test antibody positive for HSV 2 have at least genital infection and shed virus from the genitals, with or without symptoms. But a blood test is not the way to diagnose whitlow. That should be a swab test from a lesion. I would say statistically, the chances that he has it only genitally is low.
