Hello, I just had a STD test done and my HSV 1 came back at 45.57 and my HSV 2 came back at 1.14. I have found information online that states anything under 3.50 could be false positive. I am considered low risk, I have only had one partner in 17 years and have not been sexually active in 5 months. I have never had any symptoms of HSV 2 in my entire life, however I have had cold sores ever since I was a kid. Any info you could give would be great. As you could imagine my wife and I are freeking out. Thank you for your time.

I can imagine that you are worried. You need a herpes western blot antibody test. At an index value of 1.14, there is an 85% chance that this is a false positive. Which is GREAT! We can arrange the test through our clinic to be drawn at a lab near where you live or work. Given your history, I am guessing this is going to be a false positive. Please let me know other questions you might have.

I have an appointment set, but can you explain the what could cause a false positive. I have been told one reason could be that my HSV 1 number was so high. And what values are considered false positive. I’m just trying to get as much information as I can so I can see my doctor as well informed as possible. I understand most doctors might not be as up to date on this issue as some.
Thanks for your time. -

Some people have a cellular protein, a protein that is just part of your normal body makeup, that looks similar to the one that the antibody test looks for and they trip the test artificially. we used to think that the HSV 1 cross reacted to make the false positive, but more recent research indicates that there are as many false positives with people who are HSV 1 positive as there are with people who are HSV 1 negative. Because the western blot look for all the proteins associated with the antibody to HSV, this most often clears up the question. However, sometimes even the western blot comes back indeterminate, but not often.

Hi, in the past I had confusing herpes blood test results and I took the Western blot test to confirm my status which came back negative. Since then, I haven’t tested my blood until recently starting this new year because I test for everything along w my pap annually. I wasn’t sure if I should have even tested for hsv2 with my blood work hence my results given in the past plus I had no new partners or signs of hsv2 but my provider that day sent the codes out for it. My results came back “positive” again at Igg 1.14. I am aware that this is a low positive and can be considered a false positive. My current partner (not new) also tested the same time as me and his results for hsv2 came back negative which I saw with my own eyes. Should I even stress about this and retest using the western blot test again. I thought I was done with this situation but it has come back to haunt me and I’m worried all over again that I might possibly have herpes.

I think it isn’t fully necessary to do the blot again IF you’ve had this issue in the past. In people with low positives, we see this happening repeatedly. I think you are falling into that group!
