      Hello Terri!

Thank you for your time. I wanted your professional opinion on the likelihood of me having contracted HSV-2. I’m racking my brain and it’s affecting my health. I am a male and received oral sex a few weeks ago. The next day I had UTI symptoms. Tenderness in genitals, mild burning in urethra and mild balanitis, very little clear discharge, frequent urge to urinate, and mild pelvic tenderness. I took a urine test and they determined it was indeed a UTI after they tested the bacteria. They gave me doxy 100mg. That cleared up the bacteria in my Urine and 80% of the symptoms. I’m concerned because I found after asking that my partner has HSV-1 (no present outbreak) and I still have very SMALL Uti symptoms with no bacteria in my urine (they re-tested for bacteria after I finished the Doxy regimen. Although no sores or rashes it has my mind racing on whether it could be HSV-2. I have had 3 IGG tests done post-exposure and they were all negative. 1 test didn’t give me specific numbers (just said I was negative and below 0.91), and the other 2 tests were 0.24 and 0.21. In your professional opinion should I be concerned or worried? Should I abstain from sex? What is your opinion on this based on your years of experience? Thanks!

People don’t get HSV 2 from receiving oral sex – they get HSV 1, if anything. your negative IgG results reflect a negative that is very likely correct. I honestly don’t think that this should be a concern for you.

Ok thank you! Just being curious, what is the earliest you can take a Western Blot test for accurate test results post-exposure?

Hey Terri! Just making sure you saw my follow up question. What is the earliest one can accurately take a WB test? Can I take one 6 weeks post exposure if I wanted to?

You should wait 12 weeks from any concerning encounter to get a western blot. You can take one at 6 weeks but it should not be relied upon as the final answer.
