Hey Terri,
Can you confirm my knowledge on a few things: 1) You cannot get HSV1 (cold sores) from drinking after someone (glass or bottle); 2) you are okay to share chapstick with someone who does not have an active cold sore (they might have had them in the past); and 3) the only way you can get HSV2 is through sexual contact – not through shared towels, clothes etc. Thanks for the feedback.

As with many things, I can give you the best advice we have but there are always tiny exceptions possible. Getting HSV 1 from sharing a drink is extremely unlikely. I don’t think I would share chapstick as that will stay moist and warm if covered. The only way you get HSV 2 is through sexual contact. We do encourage people to have their own towels but we know of no cases of HSV 2 transmission through inanimate objects except perhaps sex toys.
