      Hi Ms.Warren,

I’m a 27M and I had a sexual encounter on 4/21 of this year. I went in for sti testing two weeks later and received a positive Igg for hsv1 (1.9) and hsv2 (1.06). I then did another screen approximately two weeks later and i tested hsv1 (1.6) hsv2 (1.10). I plan on going in for testing again in two weeks, but I was wondering if there’s a chance for this to be a false positive? I am asymptomatic and just extremely worried. Would you recommend the western blot?

There is an excellent chance that both of these are false positives, yes. I would absolutely recommend the western blot, most certainly, but please wait 12 weeks from the concerning sexual encounter in April for greatest accuracy. Have you ever had a cold sore in your lifetime? If yes, then you can count on the positive HSV 1.

Thank you so much, I don’t ever get cold sores but my ex used to get them, I’m more worried about the hsv2. Is it possible for the test to confuse hsv1? If I were to retest instead at 8 weeks and my igg index were to go up, is that good indication that I’m positive?

Good afternoon Terri, I retested after 5 weeks of my exposure and my igg values dropped to 1.04 and a supplemental assay was done and it came out negative. Am I negative or should I test again later on?

I think it is very unlikely that you are infected but as you know, it is a little too early for a final answer.
