Hi, I have had HSV1 for 7 years. I get cold sores on my lips now maybe once per year and I have become comfortable with this. I have started to ride my bike a lot as a stress reliever (around 15-20 miles at a time). I have never ridden my bike this much. About 2 weeks ago, I noticed a blister on the side of my index finger between the knuckle and the bendy part of the finger. I figured it was just a blister from all the bike riding. It didn’t start like clusters, there was no significant pain, and I just let it dry out and begin to heal. I haven’t had an oral hsv1 outbreak in over a year. The blister had almost completely healed, except for the very middle. It was all light pink new skin but the middle seemed to have a thicker new dermal layer (not a scab) I picked it and it was new pink skin underneath. So basically, there was no discharge from the healing blister. My question is, do you think this was Herpes Whitlow? I ask because I had totally forgotten about it due to the fact that it had basically healed and masterbated. After the fact, I realized what I had done and now I’m worried I have given myself genital HSV.

Once a person has well established infection (4 months or more) in one location on their body, they don’t get that same type in a new location on their body. I would feel quite strongly that this is unlikely to be herpetic whitlow and very likely a blister from biking. The same applies to inoculating yourself in a new place (genitals) so I don’t believe that is a concern. Perhaps gloves while riding would be helpful?

So If it was Herpetic Whitlow (very low chance) and it wasn’t fully healed, and I touched myself in that way, what would be the chances of giving myself Genital HSV1? Sorry for my OCD but your responses and clarification help to put my mind at ease (there is a lot of conflicting information on the internet)… And what would be the chances that I would randomly get a herpetic whitlow on my finger after having oral HSV1 for 7 years? While not having any new sexual partners…

Again, the same principle applies. Once you have HSV 1 in one location, you are essentially vaccinated against getting it a new location. That applies both to your finger and your genitals.
