Hi Terri,
First I just want to say what a great website for info and for asking questions. In 2011 I contracted HSV 1 Genital and I believe orally. 2011 was my first exposure to the virus as I have not to my knowledge had ever had a cold sore or genital sore. When I was first exposed I had terrible ulcers on my tongue that actually left scares and which had me concerned then a day or so after I had genital sores which then I had my swab test done and was told I had HSV1 genital. I have stayed away from the dating world as I haven’t really been comfortable until now.
My question is, I am currently dating a man who gets cold sores and has had for years (which I have seen). We have not had sex as of yet. Recently we had oral and manual stimulation and recently he tired to have sex with me but I stop it due to my comfort level and lack of knowledge for my concern. But his penis did come into brief contact with my vagina and 6 days ago (nov 13) after this happened I had my first outbreak since 2011 which symptoms showed up (Nov 25). Because he carries HSV1 antibody what are his chances of getting HSV1 genitally from this experience ? And what are his chances of getting HSV1 genitally if we have intercourse in the future? Thanks so much for your help!

It is extremely unlikely that he would acquire HSV 1 from you genitally as he has built a solid immune response to HSV 1 from his experience with cold sores. So this is the answer to both of your questions, actually. If you were my patient, I would have no worries for you and your partner. And we are talking cold sores here, not canker sores, right?

Thank you so much for your response Terri I really appreciate it!! I’ve been having a freak out since as mentioned I’m currently having an outbreak and going over 3 years without one has just turned my head inside out. Yes, He definitely gets the typical blister like cold sore on the outside edge of his lip. So one partner with hsv1 genital and the other partner with hsv1 oral, the partner with HSV1 oral has an extremely low chance if any of acquiring HSV1 Genital from intercourse with no antivirals or condoms ? I know its almost the same question but you can read ALOT of weird things and opinions on the internet and just making sure we are comfortable to take the next step when the time comes.
Thanks so much again,

I just realized all my dates in the original post are all mixed up. It should be Jan 20 and Jan 25 if that matters.

The dates don’t really matter. Yes, a person who has oral HSV 1 having sex with a person with genital HSV 2 is extremely unlikely to acquire HSV 1 genitally through intercourse.
