Good morning,
I’m dating with a girl that has HSV1 genital herpes. I have oral herpes (type HSV1 as well) since 16 years ago.
Is it possible that I get genital herpes from her or since I have oral herpes it’s not possible?
In case I woud have an outbreak, would it be intense?
Thank you very much.
Kind regards
It is extremely unlikely that since you have oral HSV 1 only (are we talking cold sores not canker sores here?) that you would subsequently acquire HSV 1 genitally. The immune response that you make from the oral infection is basically a vaccination against acquisition of the exact same virus in a different location. I think you are a perfect match, herpes-wise, with this partner.
Having said that, some people acquire HSV 1 orally and genitally at the same time but are only symptomatic at one location. So if you turn up with genital hSV 1 at some point down the road, I would make the assumption that you acquired it at the same time you acquired the oral infection, if you were sexually active and received oral sex at the time you acquired HSV 1 orally.

Thanks Terri.
I’m talking about cold sores.
What is the percentage of risk (if exists) of getting genital herpes if we have intercourse with no protection?
I know you are talking about cold sores, me too, that’s oral herpes. That’s what I’m referring to above. There is an extremely low (if any) risk of you getting HSV 1 genitally since your already have it orally.
