› Forums › Herpes Questions › HSV1 possible false positive; didn’t disclose
Hi so last August I (30F) got a positive result back for HSV1 with an IgG level of 2.25 HSV2 came back negative. I have never had any symptoms of HSV that I am aware of and also have not had any type of outbreak in the year since. My primary was like it’s no big deal and there really wasn’t any need to disclose in the future. I hadn’t had any sexual contact since the test until last week and there was unprotected oral sex. I did not disclose, I felt extremely bad afterwards and then let the person know. Because of this I started to spiral and came across the forum and that my positive might be a false one. I see alot of things about a potential false positive range for HSV2 but I’m not sure if that also applies to HSV1. I want to say again I have not had any symptoms and honestly hadn’t given it much thought until this most recent encounter that left me feeling like the worst person and with high anxiety levels. I hope to take the western (I have signed up for a evisit with you). I was just curious about hearing your thoughts before then. Thank you.
Hi Terri just following up with this as I saw you were online.
HSV 1 can also be a false positive at this level, that’s true. You might want to consider getting a western blot to be more certain. But if it is positive, you cannot know if your infection is oral or genital, without an outbreak in either location. If you get symptoms in either location, please have them swab tested for HSV by PCR or NAAT for greatest accuracy.
Terri
