I came across this site while doing extensive Internet research and hope I might find a clear answer here.
So, here’s my story. I’ve had oral herpes ( I assume hsv1 ) my entire life, 38 years. As a child I had many bad outbreaks. As the years have gone on they have lessened but I still use acyclovir when needed. My girlfriend never experienced cold sores of any kind throughout her life but recently got a pretty bad one, I assume this is from kissing contact with me. She was not aware of what it was and I didn’t notice it at first. I inadvertently allowed her to perform oral sex on me with an active cold sore on her lip, I saw it right afterwards, that was yesterday and I’ve been giving her acyclovir 400 mg 3 times a day and it’s already starting to clear up, I also started taking acyclovir myself due to the contact.
Since she had an active cold sore I’m concerned about the hsv1 being transfered to my genital region. Everything I’ve read online gives conflicting information. I’d like to know what my risks are here as far as reinfection as well as how my partner and I should proceed with sex in the future and what precautions might be needed to keep her from being exposed genitlly.
Thanks in advance.
It would be extremely unusual (though not impossible) to acquire HSV 1 in a new location on your body after years of having HSV 1 orally.
