Hi Terri,
My understanding is that there has been no confirmed cases of an individual getting HSV1 (cold sore) from sharing a glass or bottle with someone with a cold sore. Is this correct? I also heard that there is no risk for transmitting HSV1 if you do not have an active cold sore (but have had them in the past) – that you can share away with glasses and/or bottles. Is this correct also? Finally, if you have one bump below lip filled with white pus – that’s a pimple correct?
I am not aware of any transmissions through glasses or bottles of HSV 1, but I would probably not share same with someone who had an active cold sore. If you don’t have an active cold sore, I would say the risk of transmission is incredibly low. Herpes lesions don’t normally have pus in them – they are fluid filled blisters, not pus filled lesions.

Thank you Terri – one more question. The main source of stress for my spouse continues to be transmission from a drinking cup. She was at an office party last week and their were a number of glasses/cups at the bar. She’s worried she might have used a cup from someone who had a cold sore and put the cup back on the bar when they finished. I assured her that you said you have never heard of a documented case where this happen. “Theoretically it possible but its never happened.” I also told her that when you drink something nothing really touched your outside lips. Is it safe to safe she has nothing to worry about? Thanks.
I would say that she has nothing to worry abut!
Terri
