Hello,
My last sexual partner is positive for both HSV1 &2. We used protection for the most part. He and I were intimate beginning of 11/2022 without a condom. The next week was thanksgiving and I had a bad stomach ache. My partner voiced his concerns that he may have transmitted to me because he too would feel uneasy before an ob, but hadnt had one recently.I wasnt very worried but noticed a row of painless bumps on my labia upon self examination and scheduled an appointment. I was also constipated during that time. My Gyno ran tests and told me everything came back normal aside a yeast infection. milk of magnesia and the antibotics made me feel better. She looked at the raised skin and said it did not look herpetic but instead like clogged oily pores.
I had my womans annual scheduled 01/27/2023 so figured to retest at that point. I learned the first testing didnt include herpes. She did a vaginal exam again and discouraged testing for herpes so I went to planned parenthood. At this point February 06/2023 Ive started feeling discomfort in my thighs and legs. the clinician there said that the bumps on my vagina werent herpetic but the sensation does indicate herpes since I tested negative syphilis etc. She said she wouldnt normally test me but did and My IGG blood test came back HSV1 >5.0 and HSV2 <.90. I’ve now gotten antiviral Rx through wisp.
I went again 03/13/2023 to the doctor because paranoia had me questioning a painful ingrown hair. The doctor looked at it in a second and said it wasnt herpetic either. It was full of yellow puss and stopped hurting & started bleeding once the pus and stuff drained. She said none of what I described seemed like an initial OB and I may have had HSV1 for years since I never tested. I’m so confused what to expect next. Is 5.0> and my symptoms reasonable for a WB? how long after sex should I wait to retest hsv1&2?

Do antivirals only protect HSV2 infections? Is that why I now have hsv1 wereas the last sexual partner has both hsv1 and 2. Could having sex with him just sparked symptoms of an infection I already unknowingly had?
Could the hsv1 antibodies have possibly protected me from hsv2 when exposed to both so initiated symptoms of burning thighs and yeast infection in the process?
I ask since my doc says none of it seems like an initial outbreak with my numbers and symptoms. My gynos theory is ive had hsv1 and mg last partner is just a coincidence that got me to test -

I don’t think that your symptoms resemble herpes at all, but if you want to get a western blot for greater clarity, you should wait 12 weeks after unprotected sex for the last time before doing the test. I suspect that your HSV one infection is longer standing, and I don’t think that your symptoms are consistent with HSV one either. Your antibodies to HSV one will not protect you against acquiring HSV-2. I would agree that you’ve probably had HSV one for a while and you just found out about it through testing, but I can’t say that for certain.

Hey Terri. Thank you for the feedback. Im curious now after reading an anxious paranoid persons question.
Is the any chance my results were effected by taking anti virals? My last partner gave me a few valtrex pills,l lysine, and activated charcoal. Im not sure if it was before i got my blood drawn or after. I actually think it was before. Could i possibly have altered my results due to taking that medicine. Also recalling my parent telling me she was prescribed herpes medicine for a random ugly irritation on her face yet stopped taking it, nothing was explained to her and another person pointed out the pills were for herpes. This was like 20 years ago so now I’m wondering if that was the actual potential exposure.

I am not concerned that a few Valtrex pills would impact your results. If you had taken an extended course of Valtrex or any other antiviral right after you thought you acquired herpes, that could impact testing but it would need to be for a longer period of time with many more pills. Lysing and activated charcoal would have no impact on testing. I think years ago, there was confusion about if cold sores were caused by herpes. We certainly know now that they are caused by most commonly HSV one infection.
