I got an STD test because a girl I just met on the 20th who I quickly became very interested in and is also very interested in me requested it. I was absolutely horrified to see the result came back “abnormal” for HSV 2. The name of the test on my results is “HSV-2 Type Spec Ab, IgG w/Rflx” and was taken at labcorp. I went and got a confirmatory test today that a doctor I was connected with via Labcorp and spoke to said would be back in 1-2 days. I also called and go the kit for the western blot test which they said would be here in 7-10 days.
My IGG levels are 1.25 and I am totally asymptomatic. No sores, no rash, no itching, nothing out of the ordinary down there. I realize that I am in the low positive range but I am pretty sure if I did get exposed, I got exposed on either the 18th or 19th from an ex so my body could just not have produced the antibodies yet.
I don’t want to live with the shame of this, I don’t want to have to disclose to every potential partner in the future and have them be repulsed. I am truly at the edge, I am in more emotional pain than I was when my mother died. Please help me, please…

I’m so sorry that you’re having such a difficult time with this. Would it be possible for you to ask your ex partner to get an antibody test? I was suggest that you offer to pay for it and facilitate it in anyway that’s possible. If your ex partner is negative for HSV-2, then you could do the western blot now. LabCorp always does a supplemental test on people who have an index value between 1.1 and 5.0. It is likely that a supplemental test was done but you aren’t reporting it here.
It’s pretty normal to be upset about a new herpes diagnosis but in your case, we don’t have any evidence that that’s really true. I have 117 patients now who have had positive IgG test from LabCorp but they’re at Western blot is negative.
If you think that you just got infected the 18th or 19th of March, it’s way too early to do a western blot. Unless you can get your partner to test, and they are negative, you’re going to have to wait a while to get the blot – 12 weeks. You could repeat the IgG test in six weeks and see where it’s going.

Yes I did get a confirmatory test and it should be back tomorrow. If it comes back positive I will go get the western blot as soon as possible I guess as well as repeat the IgG test in 6 weeks.
I don’t think my ex partner would be willing to take the test and I’m so overwhelmed with a deep sense of shame I don’t know if I could ask them. I also don’t trust them not to sabotage me because they are a rather vindictive woman with BPD.
I honestly can’t even put into words how deeply upset I am, the level of dark thoughts I have been having. I am debating checking myself into a psychiatric ward.
How likely do you think it is that my results are a false positive? Is there anywhere I can read about probabilities based on my IgG levels?

If you are thinking about hurting yourself, you should definitely check yourself into a hospital, no question.
I think it is very likely, about 90% likely that this is a false positive. Let me know about the confirmatory test, but if positive please don’t believe it yet, OK?
