Hi Terri,
Male, age 33. For the first time in my life I was administered and HSV 1/2 IGG test, without symptoms. The results came back negative for HSV 1, but positive for HSV 2. The lab results read “value: positive. Standard range: negative”. So now I have no clue how long I’ve potentially had it, and I’ve never had an outbreak. My hope is, because I’ve never had an outbreak, and the standard range = negative, this is a false positive. I read there is a negative, equivocal, and positive range, so If my interpretation is correct it’s a false positive. I wasn’t provided with “scores” but I assume the negative range falls below the threshold. Can you please tell me your interpretation and should I get a blot test? I think the blot test would give me peace of mind.
Thank you,
Hi Terri,
Just following up. I also have an appointment with you Tuesday.
Without an index value, the number associated with a positive test, I can’t really provide you with any guesses about how likely this is to be a false positive. You could try going to a lab that gives index values, like Quest or LabCorp. It is unusual for clinicians to still be ordering IgG tests that don’t give index values. If you are seeing me on Tuesday, we can order the western blot but you could do this test and have it waiting in the background, while we wait for the blot to come back?
Terri
Okay thank you. When we meet Tuesday i definitely want to order the test. I need to know..
If you’ve always been asymptomatic, does that mean you would have more antibodies aka a higher index, since they’re probably in greater number to keep a breakout under control?
No that’s not at all how this works.
Terri
