I was diagnosed with genital herpes about 9 years ago I’ve been with my partner for 7 years now he now has it too has had for about 5-6years webe learnt to live with it (it’s still hard sometimes though )but im just worried about my little boy? I had a natural birth and had no flare up at the time he’s 3 now. If this is the case then it’s highly unlikely my little boy could have it isn’t it? Their is no signs or symptoms but I worry from time to time and I’ve been reading other forums an women have commented saying their child is now 6 and have herpes now? I don’t understand? Genital is sexual contact so surely if a child was to get it it would only be HSV1? I feel in England no one knows anything about this virus they make you feel bad when talking about it (like you don’t feel bad enough) answers you have given people are really reassuring and you know what talking about . I just need to know if there is any chance my little boy could ever get It just because we have? Also my partner gets it on his mouth and genitals I feel so bad he has got it but I was honest from the start and we are very happy but it’s hard sometimes I know when it’s a bad flare up he resents me a little.
Thanks -

You would have known within 2-3 weeks if your child was infected with HSV 2. If you see posts where people say their six year old has herpes now, it is very likely oral, not genital. It is very common for children to get oral herpes from adults with cold sores kissing their children. If children have genital herpes, then we get very worried about sexual abuse, not getting herpes at birth. That is usually a remarkable situation as babies have little immune system to deal with herpes and get normally quite ill – some die. I would strongly suggest that you take this worry off your plate right now. If your child is healthy and was healthy as a newborn, you don’t need to be concerned.
As for you and your partner – it’s too bad that he acquired herpes but as you say, he was informed and you did the best you could! My guess is, overall, he’s happier to be with you and have herpes than if he wasn’t with you and didn’t have herpes. What do you think>

My god you have just took a massive weight off my shoulders thank you so much. Here in England doctors and nurses are so ignorant towards you when you talk about it It’s only looking things up on the internet that you begin to understand things and sometimes it’s not the best reading the Internet as it can make you feel worse at times lol you have really put me at ease thank you and yes that’s a good way to put it witg my partner I guess he does. The next thing I was going to ask about was he recently went for an eye test and the have refered him to hospital now as they feel an infection has damaged his eye after reading up on the Internet he has come to the conclusion it’s because of the herpes? He has never had anything wrong with his eyes (touch wood) no redness no pussing no itchiness his sight is quite good he only wears glasses for reading but he feels it could be galcouma which can develop from having the virus is this true? Thanks

Herpes most definitely does not cause glaucoma, but glaucoma is not an infection either. I think it is best to wait until the doctor evaluates his eyes to see what might be going on here – herpes of the eye is possible but we don’t want to jump to conclusions here.

Ok his appointment is January so will wait to see the outcome then. Again thank you so much for your help and for your time I feel a lot more at ease with the information and advice you have given me. Also can I just ask one more thing it’s ok not to take the medicine when you have an outbreak isn’t it? Fortunately I haven’t had one for quite a bit but it’s ok to just ride an outbreak out isn’t it? Also I don’t seem to get blisters anymore they used to appear in the same spot quite often but they don’t seem to now does this just mean the virus is laying dormant for a while? Does your book tell us a lot about what I’m asking or is it more on how to deal with having the virus? Again thank you so much Terri the main thing that I have been losing sleep over has been answered an I don’t hate myself as much now thank you x

Yes, it is ok not to take medicine during an outbreak. the medicine just shortens an outbreak but in no way cures it, as medicine might with antibiotics. It is normal for outbreaks to move around – nothing to be concerned about there. The book does talk about how to deal with the virus, yes. I’m not sure if it answers your specific question, however.
Glad you are feeling reassured.Terri
