Hello,
I recently was sexually active with someone who tested positive for HSV2. He tested positive for HSV1 as well, but this was expected as he gets cold sores on his lips.
His HSV2 igg was 13.10
His HSV1 igg was 43.90He is 58 and says he probably got HSV2 in his twenties and claims to never have outbreaks genitally. Does having the antibody count of 13.10 mean that this is probably true? That he is infected with it but does not have outbreaks, at least not recently? And hopefully does this mean that my chances of contracting it are lower?
I also have hsv1 orally and have for almost 20 years. I get cold sores several times a year and my igg was in the 40s as well. Again leading me to believe that igg numbers are only this high when outbreaks are more frequent?

Yes, it is very likely that he truly has HSV 2. People who have HSV 1 first and then acquire HSV 2 often have very limited or no symptoms with HSV 2 acquisition. Your risk of becoming infected by him is lower for two reasons: 1) he’s been infected for a long time and 2) he is asymptomatic for genital infection.
The IgG results for HSV 1 are always a lot higher than they are for people who have HSV 2. I’m not sure why that is, but it is.
If he used condoms and took daily antiviral meds, your risk of acquiring HSV 2 from him would be very low.Terri

Our last encounter was in mid July, without condoms and he does not take anti virals. Up until that time, we probably had sex 6 times, all without condoms. I didn’t know he was positive for HSV2, and as soon as I found out I got tested. I got tested the first time on July 28th, and it came back negative for HSV2. I got tested again two days ago, and it came back negative for HSV2. Is it safe to assume that I do not have HSV2?

Also, concerning oral sex in this situation. Is it safe to say that since I have oral HSV1, that my chances of acquiring HSV1 genitally are extremely low if I ensure that there is no cold sore present on his lips? And is it safe to say that my chances of acquiring HSV2 orally if he has absolutely no outbreak are also very low? Again with no condom or antiviral use.

You tested for HSV 2 too soon for accuracy. You should allow at least 6-8 weeks to be tested from the last time you had sex with him.
Oral HSV 2 is rare – that risk is way lower than the intercourse risk without a condomTerri
