Went in for physical had a complete blood work done, dr stated in my results I tested positive for Hsv2 with a level of 6.5 but I’ve never had any symptoms, any outbreaks nothing. Been with the same partner 12 years no other stds. My question is what is the likelihood of it being a false positive. My dr also stated that it’s just there I don’t need medicine and I don’t need to inform anyone because I’ve never had an ob. Confused on what I should do.

Hi Terri — Hoping I might be able to get your perspective. Seen you’ve been active on more recent threads, so bumping this up for you. Thanks!

Hmmm. This could be a false positive – I have seen false positives in this range before, though it is a pretty high index value. If you’ve never had symptoms and your partner of 12 years doesn’t have HSV 2, I think you should get a western blot to confirm.

It is terrible advice not to tell partners. Apparently, your doctor is unaware of asymptomatic viral shedding.

If you were my patient, I would suggest that your partner be tested first. If they are negative, get a western blot. If you are positive and your partner is negative, consider daily antiviral medicine to reduce the risk of infecting them. However, if you have not transmitted in 12 years, the transmission risk is low.
