Exposure: August 7, 2014 (receptive oral sex from questionable partner who stated she was tested but wouldn’t show me the results) – Immediately following receptive oral sex, within a few hours or so, I noticed a red bump form on the circumcision line of my penis. Another showed on my penis head (a bit smaller) and they healed within a few weeks. I do believe they scabbed during the healing process. In addition, during that time I did get flu symptoms.

August 8, 2014 – 1 Day Post Exposure – HSV2 Results: Positive 4.11 IGG2 (Test: Unknown – Local STD Clinic will not tell me the test since they only state that they send it to the CDD. I called the CDD and they refer me back to the clinic)

Note: Spoken to several virologist at University of Washington and they stated that I had this prior to receiving oral sex. I’ve only had one other sex partner in my life who I had tested at the same clinic, her results showed as negative. After I was told I was positive, the doctor at a local healthcare clinic prescribed me a 10 day cycle of Valtrex and told me to follow up with my local PCP.

September 16, 2014 – 40 Days Post Exposure – HSV 2 IGG, TYPE SPECIFIC AB HERPESELECT (Focus Diagnostics) – Results: Negative (<0.90)

September 18, 2014 – 42 Days Post Exposure (6 Weeks) – BioKit HSV2 (STD Clinic in Houston, TX) – Results: Positive

      September 18, 2014 – 42 Days Post Exposure (6 Weeks) – Western Blot – HSV1: Positive HSV2: Negative

      October 14, 2014 – 99 Days Post Exposure (3 Months) – HSV 2 IGG, HERPESELECT W/REFL HSV2 INHIBITION (Focus Diagnostics) – Results: Negative (<0.90)

I know that HSV1 & HSV2 share close to 50% of it’s DNA structure, but is there cross reactivity of HSV1 & HSV2 on tests? Say for instance this is my first exposure to HSV1 was from receptive oral sex, has it ever scientifically been seen that the human body temporarily creates immunoglobulin 2 before levels of immunoglobulin 1 rises? Should I consider more testing? Do you have any statistics on individuals who got hsv2 from receiving strictly oral sex? Should I consider another Western Blot through Westover Heights? If so, what is the process? I do have insurance for free blood testing through Quest Diagnostics.

Also, in case you ask – I only took the 10 days of Valtrex and never continued suppressive therapy.

Yes, you need a western blot. Your results are all over the place. You are the ideal candidate for this test.
If you get your test ordered through Westover Heights Clinic, insurance cannot be billed. The test and consultation is $250. If you order a test kit from the University of Washington to be sent to you and drawn by your own provider and returned to UW, they may be willing to bill your insurance for you. Quest will no longer bill our WB patients because they had such bad luck collecting from people, so we changed our policy regarding payment to meet their needs as we are emphatic about being able to continue to offer this test to people.

I hope this is helpful. If I had to guess, you are not infected. The odds of getting HSV 2 from oral sex only are incredibly low. You have a high index value for HSV 2 but then a negative. I just had someone with an index value of 5.2 test negative by western blot.

Went to go get tested again on 4/9/15 (8+ months after the exposure), and the Herpeselect HSV2 IGG came back negative once again as displayed in the appended image. Should I let this go or consider more testing? Thanks!!

If you were my patient with a once positive above 4 and a positive Biokit, I would order you a western blot.
