Hi Terri,
I think I am mostly just trying to deny my reality, but thought I would reach out anyway.
I am a 29yo MSM and was dating a 34yo man for a year (Jan ’20- Jan ’21) with confirmed HSV2. He said he hadn’t had an outbreak in a long time so only took Valtrex when there was one coming on and that my risk ‘was very low’.
Anyway, we last had unprotected sex Dec 6, 2020 and broke up around the new year. I decided to get tested February 15th and the results came back:
HSV1 Ab IgG Res: 36.50 H
HSV2 Ab IgG Res: 1.57 H
My last negative test for HSV2 was September 20, 2020, but I don’t know what the IgG numbers were then. I’ve always tested positive for HSV1. There was no reflex or supplemental test listed on my results report.
I have been completely symptom free and was in shock when told it was positive especially given my negative test in September, though we had regularly been having unprotected sex. There have been no other partners since him on Dec. 6.
I’m assuming here the answer is just to either get re-tested with IgG after the 12 week mark, but most likely do a Western Blot? However, given my partner’s confirmed status isn’t it just likely that I got it from him and started seroconverting after 9/20/20?
Thanks so much
No, I don’t think your assumption is correct. Your 1.57 is still a very low positive and I would urge you to repeat the IgG when 12 weeks have passed since your last encounter with him OR do straight to the blot. If you last had unprotected sex Dec. 6, the timing is correct for you to do either. Of course, my preference is the blot as it is a far superior test but your call. Please – don’t assume just because he is HSV 2 positive that you are also.
Terri
