      Hi Terri,

About 6 weeks ago, I thought I had a bug bite on my waistline / buttocks area, i went to urgent care and they tested it, the results came back as hsv2. I took 20 days worth of Valacyclovir. After 2 weeks, It scabbed up and fell off, but now the skin is still visibly red where the scab was, and barely healing. It doesn’t hurt or itch or anything, but it’s been 4 weeks since the scab fell off, so I’m really concerned it’s taking so long for my skin to go back to normal (I’m pale if that makes a difference). I started using bandaids this week, because the rash is inconveniently directly on my waistline / upper buttocks so it rubs on clothes (which probably doesn’t help the healing). I also started using aquaphor, and vitamin e oil this week.

Do you think it’s bad to cover it with a bandaid? Could this potentially be a scar? Do you think I should refrain from applying aquaphor or vitamin e oil on the rash? Do you recommend any prodoucts? Just trying to figure out how to get my skin back to normal so it would be hugely helpful to get some advice. Thanks!

I don’t think it is bad to cover it with a Band-Aid but I don’t see why you’re doing that unless your clothes are irritating it as you suggest. Usually, herpes lesions do not scar but in people of color, the pigment can be gone for a while. I have also seen scarring on the buttocks of people who get buttocks lesions. I don’t have any great ideas about how to get the redness to go away but I think there are some products on the market that deal with scars if you think that might be what’s going on here. You should check them out.
