Hi Terri,
So I am dating a man who is positive and symptomatic for HSV2. He is unable to tolerate antivirals and actually transmitted HSV2 to his last partner on their first encounter — with protection. This was 6 months after infection. He’s now around 1.5 years out.
Before we got together, I tested my blood for hsv1 and 2 and came back as negative for both.
last week, I performed unprotected oral sex on him while he was not having an outbreak (I’m not worried about catching HSV2 orally as it would be almost like inoculating myself).
About 4 days after, I noticed swollen lymph nodes, a very swollen red throat with white spots and a low grade fever. I’ve had strep many times before and it does not look like my normal strep throat (I tend to just use the wine gargle method when I have strep and that hasn’t helped at all this time). No cold symptoms or sneezing or coughing to note. We have kissed since and he is not sick.
Out of precaution, I actually took a 1g valtrex last night. Today, my throat still is very red and angry but seems to have calmed a bit. I also take pergonium sidoides whenever I get sick which has also been shown to inhibit hsv replication.
With that said, at this point I haven’t developed any noticeable sores, but is there a chance this could be HSV2? And if so, is there a way to just swab my throat for it, even without active lesions?
Would taking valtrex inhibit the possibility of a positive result? If swabbing at this point isn’t a possibility, can you do an igM test or do I need to wait 3-4 months to do an igg?
Thanks so much
it is possible and you should have a throat swab for HSV right now. Why is swabbing not a possibility? I gram of Valtrex will not impact an antibody test. Never do IgM testing. You should wait about 8-10 weeks to do an IgG test, 12 weeks to do a western blot
Terri
