› Forums › Herpes Questions › HVS2 false positive? should I re-test or western blot
Hi
I am a 41 year old male, I have had a fair number of partners in my life. At least one or two, though in monogamous relations, might have had a history of herpes but were not clear about it and I don’t have the means to ask it they have since had tests. Much of my sexual history was monogamous but un-protected.
I have not ever had breakouts or any kind of symptoms too out of the usual that have alarmed me.
I have always tested for STI’s but upon discovering that herpes was not being tested, I decided to do it on a whim.
on an igg, my hsv1 is negative, my hsv2 is 2.59
here is as much info as I have on test type:
Test Name: HSV TYPE 1&2 SPECIFIC ABS, IGG
Name Value Reference Range
HSV TYPE 1, IGG <0.91 0.00-0.90 index
HSV TYPE 2, IGG 2.59 0.00-0.90 index
General Notes: PERFORMING LAB: LABCORP RARITAN, 69 FIRST AVE, RARITAN, NJ 08869
this shows the index threshold being quite low, but is the grey area for false positives on this still 1.0 – 3.5 ?
is this possibly inconclusive and should I consider a western blot
thank you
Yes this could be a false positive. For sure. The odds of it being a false positive are about 40%, in that range. I would most definitely recommend a western blot for you to be certain of your herpes status. Our clinic can arrange for you to have bloods drawn at a Quest lab near you and shipped by Quest to UW. You can call and set up an appointment for that with me or you can get a kit directly from UW. I will be out of the country until Sept 17 but I am going to have two days during this time that I will make appointments for phone consultations for western blots and other things. My office will soon have those dates (they don’t yet – I need to see my schedule at this meeting). There is definitely hope here.
Terri
