Hello Terri!
On March 31st, I was exposed to the hsv 1 virus after a one-night stand. Some days after, I experienced slight itching down there, I though I had an infection so I put some itch cream and I was good after that.
3 weeks after my exposure, the man comes clean about his HSV 1 status. But he said not to worry because he was asymptomatic and we only had sex 1 time.
Not knowing much about HSV and only the stigma that comes behind it, I got scared. Mostly because recently my doctor told me I’m pre-disposed to Lupus. So I was very fretful when it came to my health.
I decide to take the hsv tests, which included the IGM AND IGG.
I take the tests 3 weeks and 1 day after the exposure. Then the results came in:
IGM: 1.72 for both
IGG: Negative for both HSVsI saw this and I was confused, but I thought I had it. Not only that, but right after I get my results, I get a horrible yeast infection (I was taking antibiotics for almost a week), a bump on my groin, and some sudden bouts of pain in my pelvis area. So I thought hsv triggered all of these symptoms. (I get bumps a lot since I was a kid, some develop pus and some don’t and don’t even hurt, so when this came in I thought i was fine before my results.)
I take a swab test on my bump and the test comes negative.
Then, I go to my gyno and she says that I have hsv because of my IGM test and that later the IGG will turn positive. She opens me up and tells me that I also have an infection.
It’s been months now and I haven’t seen any outbreak. I’ve gotten that one single pimple or bump that I sometimes get, but none of them looks like the hsv pics I’ve seen.
I have another gyno appointment this week, so i decided to take the test again this August 18th. These are the results:
IGM: 1.50 for both
IGG: Negative for bothI know IGM can identify new infections, but after 16 weeks, can it still be positive? Can I rest assured after the IGG that I don’t have HSV? Thank you so much for your time!

You should completely ignore the IgG. The CDC says never to do it given a very high rate of false positives. The Mayo Clinic stopped doing it in 2019! You should count on the igG test results instead, though the IgG test missed 30% of HSV 1 infections, compared to the gold standard western blot and 8% of HSV 2 infections.
