Had hsv 2 igg test in 2020 came back positive at 1.30… no supplemental test done at that time. Had high hsv 1 reading as I get cold sores on mouth. DR. just said you have both 1&2. Took hsv 1 & 2 igg again in Feb 2023 but this time with the supplemental test. Came back with result hsv1 was high like 49.0 and hsv2 was 1.20 but the supplemental test came back negative. Dr said come back in 4 weeks to retest. This week tested both again, hsv 1 came back higher 59.0 as I have an active sore on my mouth, hsv 2 came back as 1.5 but lab was out of the supplemental test so they couldn’t do it. Dr. Is saying let’s assume you have it?! Ps. Also Had negative pcr swab test 8 weeks ago too. What should I assume here?
I would strongly disagree with your doctor’s opinion on this. People who have a high HSV-1 index value fairly often have some cross-reactivity with HSV-2, causing a low positive HSV-2 IgG. I have been collecting data on patients with LabCorp testing done with the supplemental test. We now have around 40 people with a negative supplemental test from LabCorp who also had negative Western blots. We have poor agreement between people who have positive IgG results and positive supplementals. We have over 120 of those who are negative by Western blot. I don’t really understand why your doctor would say if the supplemental test is negative that, you are still infected from your first testing. Also, there is really no reason to repeat the test at a given time unless you’ve had a new sexual contact and are possibly making antibodies from a brand-new infection.
