Hi Terri
After having a lesion in my genital area that looked more like a razor cut and was taking a while to heal, I went to an Urgent Care and asked for a herpes IGG test,no swab of the lesion was done at the time. My blood sample was taken and sent to LabCorp and came back with the following results: HSV1 > 66 High
HSV2 >7 high. After results, I was prescribed to take Valtrex for 10 days, but to be honest it didn’t make any difference. Fourth months later, I talked to my PCP about it and I asked for a full STI panel including herpes. Blood sample was sent to Sonora Quest and came back with the following results negative for all STI but herpes:Herpes simplex Virus type 1 specific >8.0 high Ab IgG result Positive, the same result for HV2.My question is: can this still be a false negative due to the fact that I had the chicken pox as a child and had the vaccine because I was born in another country. I have never had a cold sore on my lips, but once in a great while I get more like a small canker sore inside my mouth and usually goes away and don’t bother me at all. I talked to the guy I was dating and had sexual intercourse a year ago and he said he never had any problems with herpes nor his ex wife. This situation has taken a toll on my mental health, so I’m thinking of having the Western blood test for peace of mind. Any advise or suggestion will be greatly appreciated. Thank you so much -

I meant to add I was given oral sex and had sexual intercourse a year ago. Also, I had my annual Pap smear test done last month and I was asked to have an STI test check and came back normal and negative for all STI but herpes was not included I think.Thank you

While it is possible that this is a false positive, I would say that given the higher level index values, it is likely to confirm as positive if you did the western blot, but if you aren’t sure, that is the test that I would recommend. We have seen false positives as high as 17 on the HSV 2 IgG test so if you have any question, do the blot.
