Hello so my boyfriend just received his igg results . I was hoping you can help me to understand the results better
For hsv 1 IGG, type specific a/b he got 36.40 h
For hsv 2 igg, type specific a/b he got 1
The scale is the following
Less then .9 means negative
.9-1.09 is equivocal
1.09 and greater is positive
He scord high on the hsv 1
Is that only cold sores ? Which is normal for most individuals
And as for the hsv 2 what does equivocal mean ? What are the chances of him having it ?
All i be done is kiss him and once oral
Should I be worried ?
Your boyfriend is positive for HSV one, the common cause of cold sores. And you are correct that the majority of the US population has this infection.
His equivocal result on the HSV-2 test could be there for many reasons. First, he could be newly infected and be in the process of developing antibody. Second, his strong antibody response to HSV one could be causing an elevation in his HSV-2 igG result.
If you do not have HSV one, you could become infected by kissing him

What are the chances of him having hsv 2? Should i have him get retested or what test should i have him take ?
How can i avoid getting hsv 1
Has he ever had a cold sore on his lip or in his nose? If yes, then he has it orally.
I don’t know the timing of his sexual encounters with anyone who might also have HSV 2 so I can’t answer that question.
I am assuming that you have also been tested for HSV 1 and HSV 2 and are negative for both? It is important to know that the Igg test for HSV 1 misses 30% of infections compared to the gold standard western blot so even if you tested negative for HSV it could have missed an infection.
