Hi There,
I have had mild irritation around my vagina and anus for quite some time. I have random spotting and sometimes bleed after sex. I went to the dr and had a standard STD panel and PAP done. All of which came back negative – including a HSV NAA swab. I was then sent for an ultrasound – which also came back with no abnormalities. I have never had any visible sores or lesions.
I was convinced I had genital HSV due to the irritation and spotting. However, my OBGYN is thinking it’s more hormone related.
I decided to get a HSV blood test (type specific) on my own through a lab, which came back with the following index:
HSV 1 IGG – 5.15 H (BOLD) positive
HSV 2 IGG – <.90 negative
With that said – are my symptoms related to this positive test? & if so will the viral suppressants help the irritation/itch and spotting?
Thank you for your time!
I doubt your issues are about HSV. First, have you ever had a cold sore in your lifetime? If yes, that’s why your HSV 1 is positive. If no, then it is possible though less likely that it is genital and if it is, HSV 1 is rarely active in the genital area. So I don’t think your issues are about HSV 1 genital infection.

Thank you Terri.
I have never had a cold sore on the mouth or in the region of the mouth, that I am aware of.
Is bloody discharge a sign if genital HSV? I have read lots of conflicting information on this.
Does the 5.15 indicate a newer or older infection?
Also, is there anyway I have HSV-2 with my score being right at the .90 cut off mark?
Thanks again for all of your help!
Bloody discharge is most definitely not a sign of herpes.
If you are newly infected, your HSV 2 might still be negative
the 5.15 suggests a more well established infection than a brand new one.

My last follow up question for this thread:
What is an acceptable/reliable time frame for test accuracy from possible exposure?
Thanks again!
well, I would say a 10 week wait for a final IgG test or a 12 week wait for a herpes western blot
