I recently went to the doctor because a stranger gave me cigarette from his mouth, and for some reason i thought i had oral herpes i asked my doctor to take a blood test for it my results came back as positive 1.24 for both types of herpes , for the last 7 yrs i have only been with my wife so i don’t know how this happen unless any of my past relationships had it, is possible this test is wrong??

I am not at all concerned about your sharing a cigarette with a friend but your test is technically positive for both. Are you certain that you are reading this correctly that BOTH your HSV 1 and HSV 2 are exactly 1.24? It is certainly possible that your test is a false positive at 1.24 but I would strongly suggest that you look at your test results again. It is SO unlikely that they would both be identical

Wait, are you saying that both results are IgM tests, not IgG tests? IgM test are completely unreliable. You should only rely on IgG test results. There are many false positives on the IgM tests.

This test has so many false positives! If you want to test for herpes, the test you want is IgG, not IgM

So why is it that Igm test are unreliable? And why would hey come back positive??

The test is unreliable with many false positives because the IgM molecule is huge and sticky and other proteins stick to it that have nothing to do with herpes and make it look positive when it isn’t. Now I am quite confused about the testing that you had done. You can order the type specific IgG antibody test online without going through a clinician and in your case, it sounds like that might be a better solution!

Have you had other sexual partners prior to your wife? It is possible that you were infected many years ago and it is just being detected in your blood. Has your wife had a type specific antibody test?

Yes I’ve had other partners 3 of them where unprotected like I said it has been 6+ yrs since I have been with someone else my wife hasn’t been tested so it is possible to not have outbreaks for so long. Another question is am I able to perform oral sex on my wife

your wife may never get this from you if she has not already. And you could have had it for many years before you even met your wife. Yes, you can perform oral sex on your wife. And she should definitely be tested – this may end up being a non-issue.

Now this is correctly your last post on this subscription.

Do u recommend I go on medication or do you think I should get a western blot, I just don’t get how I’ve never had an outbreak is there a possibility that 6.28 could be a false positive

Many people who have HSV 2 don’t recognize outbreaks. However, I did have someone with an index value of >6 recently not confirm on western blot, so your call. The odds are certainly about 90% that you are infected and I don’t want to give you false hope. If you are infected and your wife is not, then you should go on medication. But as I said the first step is to get her tested.
