› Forums › Herpes Questions › Increased risk of contracting HSV2 with skin irritation on scrotum?
Hi Terri
I hope you are well! My partner (female) is HSV2-positive (on daily suppressive therapy with 500mg valacyclovir) and I (male) am HSV2-negative. I have had a persistent skin irritation (redness and mild sensitivity/itchiness) on my scrotum for the last month. It has not yet responded to treatment with corticosteroids and pimecrolimus cream prescribed by my GP and dermatologist.
In your view, does the skin irritation on my scrotum put me at significantly increased risk of contracting HSV2 during condomized sex (via skin barrier compromisation)? If so, can I do anything to minimise this risk while the irritation persists?
Thanks so much for your time!
I would say it slightly increases the risk of acquisition, IF she is shedding virus. I would suggest that you sort out the cause of the irritation and get it treated. Have you tried anything on it yet?
Terri
I have applied corticosteroids and pimecrolimus cream prescribed by my GP and dermatologist, with no resolution.
I’m currently in maintenance treatment with petroleum jelly based ointment, but the irritation is still present. Would a layer of petroleum jelly serve as a barrier for HSV-2 transmission?
I don’t think petroleum jelly would be an adequate barrier, no.
I am assuming you’ve tried a course of antifungal treatment?
Terri
