I went for a std check before me and my partner had sex with out a condom and my result came back posative for hsv2 with no index value. I did some research and payed for a separate test and that test came back posative with an index of 8.0. Now I’m sure I have it but decided to pay for the western blot anyway. My test result came back indeterminate. So now I’m really confused! My partner tested and came back negative and my only previous sexual contact within the year was a unprotected blow job but that was 8 months to a year ago. What do you think I should consider the inderminate result as??

I have definitely seen false positives and indeterminates on the western blot with people who have index values as high as yours. The UW recommendation is to repeat the blot in 3 months from the first one and if indeterminate again, consider yourself negative. That is also my recommendation.
You mention other contacts within the year – what about partners before a year ago.

All partners are negative. from what I understand is that if I had hsv2 prior to a year ago my western blot would have been posative. My current partner is negative and it has been over 8 month since the unprotected blow job. That is plenty of time to have enough antibodies for a posative western blot right?

You said you have not seen an inderminate turn to a posative yet correct? I’m just hoping for the best I should expect the worst though!!

That’s correct, I’ve never seen an indeterminate go to positive and with your timing, I think you can feel very reassured here. Plus you don’t get HSV 2 from blow jobs so I think you are just fine. That’s my opinion. If it would feel better to you to do the follow up blot, that’s OK too.

Thank you for your time! This lack of knowledge from Doctors needs to change!! You can’t tell someone they have an incurable std and not even offer follow up testing! I will repeat the blot but I’m not waiting 3 months I’ve had plenty of time for antibodies to build up. This has cost me alot of money, anxiety, and depression all for nothing 😡
