Hi Terri
I just wanted to thank you for everything you do. This is an invaluable forum.
I have had HSV2 for over 30 years and have been on valacyclovir daily (500 mg twice a day) for over 7 years. Over the past year I have been having irritation in the same place almost weekly on the lower left side of my vulva by the vaginal opening. My outbreaks were always on my lower back, left side. I have not had an outbreak since being on the valacyclovir but I am wondering if this irritation could be a chronic outbreak. I had been diagnosed with vulvadynia but that seemed to have cleared up. There are not lesions and the area does not appear swollen or red just irritated mostly when walking. There are three white dots there that I believe are fordyce spots (they are there all the time). As it is always in the same place and on the same side that my outbreaks used to be. There is no radiating pain as I used to feel with an outbreak. Is it possible that it is a constant outbreak? Seems to present every 5 days or so and can last from one day to 3 and then just go away.

Sorry, I should also mention that I double up on the valacyclovir (2 gms twice a day for a day) and it doesn’t seem to make a difference.

I seriously doubt that this is herpes reactivating that often and with no lesion, on medicine.
Have you considered having that area swab tested by PCR when you have these sensations? A PCR swab test can be done even when you have no actual outbreak. I think that is the only way you are going to know for sure if these particular symptoms are related to your herpes infection – swab testing.Terri

Hi Terri
Is it possible for herpes to break out on your stomach in a straight line that looks very much like a scratch? I had a bit of itching, very slight, and then the next day I noticed a red line that looked almost like I scratched myself with my ring. There seemed to be little tiny dots but that could have just been where the skin was pulled. I immediately doubled my valacyclovir. Seemed to almost go away within about an hour or two.
Also, I have been diagnosed with OCD and whenever I feel or see something odd in the boxer short area, I double the meds. Will doing this make me resistant to the meds?
Thanks you again for all of your help.

That sounds absolutely nothing like HSV to me.
Doubling your medicine when you have what you think are herpes symptoms will not cause you to be resistant to meds, no.This is your final post on the subscription. If you have more questions, feel free to renew. Sorry for the delay in responding to your question. I have been spending Passover week with my family

Hi Terri
I have a few more questions. The first is, is it possible to have more frequent outbreaks as the years go by instead of fewer. I was curious as to how menopause affects outbreaks with or without medication.
Also, I am confused about oral HSV 2 transmission. I have read where oral sex is generally safe if you have HSV 2 and that it does not like the face. If it did happen, would the initial outbreak be severe or mild?
Thanks again.

Most people do have fewer outbreaks as they get older – not everyone though.
HSV 2 does not like the mouth, correct, but a brand new infection there could have more than mild symptoms.Terri
