In December of last year I thought I had a rash on the back of my right thigh. Upon researching it, I came across the possibility of herpes. This was the one and only time I have ever had any sort of “outbreak”, if that is indeed what this is. I have not gone to get the blood test to confirm, and quite honestly I have a lot of anxiety about it. From the pictures and descriptions that I have come across while researching, I am CONVINCED that it is herpes and it’s really terrifying 🙁
The first image is actually of a blister which was below my knee, and I had a few others below the knee as well. The other image is the back of my right thigh and the blisters had already popped at this point. I noticed that after about a week of dealing with it, they got better a lot faster once I applied Neosporin to them.
I’m not at all clear that this is herpes. Generally, a herpes rash is grouped blisters – this does not look like how I normally see herpes on the back of the thigh. And we rarely (I have never) seen a herpes outbreak below the knee. I would probably recommend that you go ahead and get the test – I know, it’s scary, but this is not a slam dunk for herpes by any means!

I forgot to mention that there was also a similar blister which burst on my right buttock, I have included a zoomed out image of the original image to show this. Also in the image there is a blister right on the inside area of my thigh, and this was the most worrisome to me as this seems to be a common place for herpes breakouts, from what I’ve researched anyway (it’s a bit hard to see in the image).
I’m happy to hear you’ve never seen herpes blisters below the knee, but does it matter that there were very few (about 2-3 blisters below the knee versus the many on the thigh)?
I will definitely get the blood test soon and hope for the best.
Do you currently still have a blister? I would recommend going to your clinician today if you still have one and have it swab tested for both varizella zoster and herpes simplex and if they think a bacterial culture is necessary, that too. This looks really uncomfortable! Yikes.
