Hi, if there is an active outbreak and/or viral shedding on the day of ivf egg retrieval, could the virus be passed on to the eggs, or into the uterus? Same question for the day of embryo transfer? Thank you
That is highly unlikely. In utero herpes infections are rare. If this is your situation, could you take daily antiviral therapy until it is finished to avoid having an outbreak during these times?
Thanks Terri but I’m not clear. Are you saying that there IS the possibility of transmitting the virus to the eggs during egg retrieval? I understand the likelihood (or unlikelihood as you’ve stated) once pregnant. My concern is about passing it DURInG the egg retrieval and embryo transfers specifically.
Antivirals have never been taken and as the retrieval is this week, they would not want to start now as there is not much time and the response to antivirals is unknown. Thanks
I decided to ask Dr. Anna Wald from UW about this as I have not been asked this before.
She said NO risk
