Hi Terri
I take Valtrex daily to prevent constant cold sores. I’ve gotten them for a long time due to someone giving them to me as a young child. Every once in a while when stressed I still get one but they aren’t nearly as bad. This time I noticed it pop up and was able to stop it by double dosing before it opened up. It’s barely noticeable now but not completely gone either.
My worry is like many other moms on here. Accidental transmission to my children. I am very good about staying on top of it but it does happen when I forgot to wash my hands or sanitize my hands before changing a diaper.
Tonight I was eating food with my hands. Which means I had saliva on my fingers. Without thinking I changed my sons massive diaper blowout. The blowout happened fast and my immediate reaction was to clean him up.. of course. I used wipes but still you can have the worry if your finger brushed against my child’s skin down there. I haven’t touched my cold sore. I rarely ever do. But my worry is saliva transmission. Google acts like saliva being anywhere but your mouth is insanely contagious. Such as saliva on your fingers from eating.
Is this true? Could I have given my child genital herpes from a diaper change that I had just used my hands to eat dinner with? There’s story after story of moms saying they accidentally gave their kid genital herpes through a simple diaper change because their hands weren’t completely clean. Have you seen this happen?
I’d never forgive myself.
Would my cold sore have to touch him directly in order to give him that? Or is it true he could get genital herpes because I didn’t wash my hands after eating with my fingers before changing his diaper?
Thank you:)
I don’t feel that the incident you describe presents any real risk of transmission of our HSV to your son, no. I have never ever seen a case of a mom giving her child herpes by changing a diaper. Never. I don’t know where you are reading these stories, can you share that with me?
Terri
