Hi Terri, thank you for the work you do. I began a new relationship with HSV2 positive female approx 2 months ago. I was previously in a long term relationship where we were both negative for any stds. New partner has been HSV2 positive for over a decade and takes daily meds (I don’t recall which one). Before our first sexual encounter she said because of her meds the odds are 98% that I won’t contract. I was comfortable with that and we didn’t use protection (penis, vaginal intercourse). This occurred on three separate occasions. Within a week after third and most recent encounter I began experiencing itchy/tingly foreskin and assumed possible OB. Also, third encounter I was getting over covid and worry of immunosuppression. I am circumcised, sensitivity/itchiness/tingling has been limited to skin folds below glans. During this time I also had jock itch in groin which I typically get in summer. Jock itch treated with OTC applied to groin (didn’t apply to penis as I’ve never had it there and didn’t have rash) itchiness and foreskin sensitivity has continued for 3.5 weeks with no signs of outbreak or sores or rash. I also experienced slight back pain at the beginning and minimal but noticeable urethra sensitivity, went to a clinic and was prescribed doxycycline, back pain went away and urinary symptoms improved but are still not 100%. Urine clear of bacteria. Foreskin sensitivity/itch has been steady for 3 weeks and saw Dr today, diagnosed likely fungal because of previous jock itch and put on cream and oral meds today but didn’t shed much light on HSV2 potential. Dr did note some mild skin irritation present on examination. Will return at 12 week mark for HSV blood test. Dr believed urinary symptoms to be related to mild prostatitis. Based on this does it sound likely to be HSV2 or with that length of time itching would I have had sores/ other symptoms? I will test either way and abstaining from sex for now and will use a condom going forward.

I think herpes is unlikely in your situation. Given the fungal infection issue already present, this sounds more fungal. And you’ve really not experienced typical herpes symptoms.
It’s fine to test at 12 weeks out and it is also fine to start using condoms with sex with this partner, yes. If you use condoms and she’s on suppression, the risk of transmission is so low.
