Hi Terri,
I am a 35 year old man and about a month ago I tested positive for HSV-2 and have had two outbreaks so far (the initial, which was just one sore, and right now I have another one which is also just one sore). I just started daily suppressive therapy witth valtrex 1000mg several days ago and plan to use a condom with my partner (also a man) whenever I penetrate him.
We still plan to have unprotected sex if he penetrates me as my infection is not in the anus. My question is, is it possible that I could shed virus from my anus, when my infection is only on the penis? (Specifically both outbreaks, the sores have been on the head of the penis.)
It is absolutely possible that you shed virus from the anus, and probably in fact. I would strongly advise that your partner use condoms with penetrative anal sex.
Terri
