Hello,
I have been what I believe to be a monogamous relationship for over 10 years. About 7 years into our relationship my husband developed oral cold sores. As far as we knew, we both had full panels done but we know have learned likely didn’t include herpes. I have a an appointment scheduled for myself, but he recently tested positive for hsv1. This has caused a major rift in our relationship and we are desperate for advice.
– Is it possible one of us carried it for all those years with no outbreaks? Can an infection lay dormant for that many years?
– if so, why would the cold sores return every year or so at this point but no time prior in our 7 years together? I don’t want to assume cheating but it’s hard not to
– we have had sex without protection regularly for over 10 years, what is the likely hood of transmission?
– why wouldn’t my ob/gyn test me for them? I was very honest about multiple partners prior to meeting my husband.

You should scroll down and read my post, I was the one who posted about getting genital HSV1 after several years of marriage. My husband has cold sores, however, his last visible one was in 2006. I don’t know if I’d assume your husband was cheating. From what I’ve read, a lot of people are infected with HSV1 and have no idea.

Thanks! I did read yours and was comforted by the answers.
As he has had cold sores, your case isn’t as surprising.
Frankly, I’m wondering if my husband knew he had them in the past and hid them from me

Absolutely! That’s very likely

oh, I don’t think you need to go there at all. Before the cold sore, did you have concerns about his fidelity?

Oral HSV 1 is not a sexually transmitted infection. Could it be acquired from someone through kissing? Yes, that’s possible but necessarily the case, by any means.

We have had our drama so infidelity isn’t out of the question.
I know they can lay dormant but is it odd for them to occur so often after nothing for so many years?
Why wouldn’t herpes have been tested for in either of our panels over the years?

Even if you and your husband have had STD panels done in the past, HSV is often not included. It would never be included in other blood panels, normally. It is not unusual for herpes to lay dormant for years, but I cannot address that concern in your specific situation.
About 70% of those truly infected with HSV 1 deny having cold sores.
