      Terri:

Thank you for all you do. I am a 40 year-old male. Was tested about 3 months (April, 2015) ago IGG HSV 1 and 2. Positive for HSV 1 and negative for HSV- 2. I have always had HSV 1 and since the last test I have not engaged in any sexual acts with any new partner. Prior to the April test (about a month before that test) ago I rubbed my penis against the vagina of a girl of unknown status (no penetration). Last week I got another test done (IGG) and the HSV 1 was a 10.8 and my HSV 2 was a 2.3. I have had no symptoms of genital herpes. I have had unprotected sex with my girlfriend over the last 2 years besides that other encounter. Since the last test came back I have not had sex with my girlfriend but I am confused. Can the high HSV 1 affect my HSV 2 blood test (from reading your forum that may be a possibility). I am pretty devastated right now as I think about what I have done. What are the chances it is a false positive? Would another IGG test be pointless? How soon can I get a WB test? And if you think that is appropriate, how do I do that? Any help will be appreciated. Attached is the results page I recieved.

So let me make sure I have all the facts: other than your regular girlfriend (has she been tested for HSV 2?), you’ve had no other partners except rubbing your penis on the vulva of another woman in March, is that right?

This could definitely be a false positive, yes. When four months have passed since the encounter with the rubbing woman, I would recommend a western blot. Our clinic can order that test for you at a Quest lab near where you live to be shipped to the University of Washington. Please see our website and the section under phone consultations for more information.

Thank you for the prompt reply…

Yes, other than my current girlfriend, nothing but that episode in the last 4 months and one other- I did have sex about 9 months ago with a girl I knew. Since that time 9 months ago I was tested about every 3 months (all negative) until this last one about a week ago. I was hoping the one exposure 9 months ago would have shown positive in the test 3 months ago.

So does the high HSV 1 in my case make it more likely to effect the HSV 2? Would I have normally shown symptoms if my index was 2.3 or could it just be building up?

Yes, I would like to do the Western Blot test.

So a phone consult and how long to get the test and results?

      I appreciate all tour help.

We used to think that the HSV 1 had an impact on the HSV 2 but a new study we are just analyzing suggests that is not the case. We don’t know why people get false positives exactly.
Even people with true positives at 2.3 might show nothing so you can’t go by that.
Just all the clinic and set up a time to talk with me to order the test. The consult can be as little as 10 minutes or more if you need more time to talk. It takes 1-3 weeks to get the test results back, usually closer to the one week mark. The possibilities for results are just positives or negatives, no numbers. Rarely we get back an indeterminate western blot, maybe 5% of the results are indeterminate.

What ate the chances it is a false positive?

I can set up a phone consult for tomorrow maybe?

And does the Western Blot test get ordered right away? Delivered ro where I live?

How much does it cost to order the test?

Thanks again and will hopefully get a chance to talk with you soon.

Hopefully, I have an opening in my schedule tomorrow to speak with you. I’ve been out of the office for several days so I don’t know how booked up I am tomorrow, but call.
The western blot gets requested right away, yes, but it takes about 5-6 days for Seattle to get the testing kit to your city so your blood can be drawn.
The cost is $250 that includes the consultation and the test itself.

This was your final post on this subscription. If you need more information, feel free to renew or we can just talk maybe tomorrow.
