Hi Terry,
I recently went in for a routine annual and was asked if I wanted STD testing. I opted for it, not knowing I was being tested for HsV2, only to get a phone call that I tested “low positive” and needed repeat testing. My igg hsv2 is 3.1, I looked it up on the testing results. Testing was done on 4/2. I have never had any symptoms.
I have had unprotected sex with 1 partner over the past year, infrequently starting in October 2017 with last encounter about 6 weeks ago. I tested negative to everything else.
Previous prior sexual encounter was in late February 2017.
I understand I need follow up testing, but am confused by the numbers because of the lack of partners. If I was infected in February 2017, wouldn’t my numbers be higher? And to that point if i was infected 6 weeks ago would they be lower?
Additionally, what kind of follow up test is needed, outside of the WB which sounds hard to come by?
And lastly, because I have no symptoms is it possible to have no symptoms your entire life?
Thank you so much.
Your index value of 3.1 Falls into the low positive range. The Center for disease control suggest that all people who test in the range of 1.1 to 3.5 need confirmatory testing such as the Western blot. I have seen people with confirmed infection for a long period of time who have values below 1.5. Some people just have low positive values. Yes, if you are truly infected, without symptoms, you could go your whole life without having any symptoms. I can help you obtain a herpes Western blot if you decide you would like to do that. In order to accomplish that, you would need to sign up for a videoconference with me and you can do that on the homepage of this website or you can work with your own provider to obtain this test. Any clinician can order the test done at the University of Washington. If you want to get started on the test, you can order your kit from the University of Washington by calling 206685 6066
