      Hi Terri,

Thank you for having this website. I have been reading your information for about 5 years now and I have a few questions.

About 5 years ago, I went to an urgent care to get an IGG Elisa test for Herpes. I did this just because of anxiety. I did not have any symptoms. My number for HSV 1 I do not remember but it was negative. For HSV 2 it came back as 2.55. This was devastating. I was also very confused because I had never noticed any symptoms. I had the person that I had un-protected sex with get an IGG test and he was negative for both. This was the only person that I had intercourse with within the 5 month time period. After this, I did some research and found out about the western blot. I decided to visit my gyno and explain this situation to him. He told me I was all wrong and that I 100% had this infection. I allowed him to do another IGG and it came back negative for HSV 1 and 2.65 for HSV 2. On this same day, he allowed the lab to spin my blood because I had already ordered the western blot and had it sent to my house. He was very convinced that I had it anyways and treated me very poorly. I had my blood spun and sent it directly to Western Blot. I do believe I sent my shipment over night. After calling Western Blot within 2 days, they still had not received it. They had received it but said they did not know where it was? They found it and ran the test. It came back for Negative antibody for HSV 1 and HSV 2 per Western Blot. 5 years later, I still struggle with this daily and think that any symptoms are caused by this issue. I have had a numerous amount of swabs done that have all been negative.

      Questions
Is it at all possible that my Western Blot could have been a false negative due to them not finding my sample for a day or two?

I have never noticed any ulcers or lesions, however I do have generalized itching. Is this a common asymptomatic symptom?

Would it benefit me to do an IGG antibody test again 5 years later?

      Thank you

No, believe the blot. We have shipments sent to UW from China and Sweden and London – you know it takes more than a day to get there. The lab would never have run the sample at all if they looked at the draw date and thought it was too long ago. Believe the blot. Your doctor should have known about the CDC guideline that says all positives that come up between 1.1 and 3.5 need confirmation as 50% of the positives in that range are false positives. You will likely always have a low positive on the IgG test until it gets a lot better.

Do you know why this isn’t made known to physicians? I transferred to a new gyno and I had my records sent over and explained my situation. She told me she had never heard of the Western Blot for that and that my IGG results means that I have been exposed but don’t necessarily have the virus? I am just very irritated because I can’t find a physician who is aware of any of this and this new gyno thinks I have no idea what I’m talking about. Do you have any idea why these specialist physicians have no idea about what is going on with these tests?
It is just very disheartening because this entire experience has taken an emotional toll on me for a long time. I have constant anxiety from it and clearly do not have access to knowledgeable physicians who can discuss this stuff with me.

      That advice is dreadful. OMG
Perhaps the problem is that herpes is not medically a big deal and physicians are used to dealing with more severe medical problems. It also involves sex and sometimes, physicians aren’t comfortable talking about these things. In addition, there are really very few herpes experts now around the country.
I understand that this is stressful, but get your blot and if negative, put it behind you. You know more than your physician right now and what’s important is that you KNOW what to do to sort this out. You can’t control the knowledge base of your providers but you can get the information and testing that you need. And you have access to me whenever you need me!

I did get the blot and it was negative for both after that IGG result. I have not had sex since. So that means I don’t need another one at this point right?

      Thanks so much!
