Hi Terri,
I have been positive with HSV1 (52-58) for over 10 years. I have only had 2 cold sores. I have always tested negative for HSV2 (.90-.91). Three months ago (November) I tested negative for HSV2 (.91) and two months later (January) I noticed a sore on my vagina and got it swab by the doctor. The results came back positive and I took another Igg test to see if my number changed for HSV2 and it did not change. Could the swab be a false positive or is the Igg test wrong? Did I recently get exposed by my partner? My partner results for HSV1 and HSV2 are .90. Could he be asymptomatic? My doctor keeps saying that we are equivocal and it is possibly a new exposure for both of us. He said he has not had sex with anyone during our sexual relationship. I have only been sexually active with him going on 1 yr and prior to him I haven’t had sex in almost 2 years. Should I take the Western Blot test to determine my results? Is the swab test more accurate than the Western Blot test?
I am so confused and don’t know which results I should go by. Please advise. Thanks!

My sex partner also told me that he was sexually active 2 months prior to us having sex. He told me that he got tested for everything after having sex with that person but I don’t think he was tested for herpes. Whenever we had sex I always developed BV and yeast infections. I never had that problem with past sexual partners.

My partner also told me that he had a cold sore in the past. I’m wondering why his HSV1 (.90) is super low since he’s had a cold sore in the past. This is why I think he’s asymptomatic and his numbers may fluctuate or he may be taking supplements without me knowing about it.

Last thing, I have developed hair bumps on top of my vagina in the past and had them swab and my HSV2 was negative. I’m also wondering if there’s a possibly I could HSV1 in my vagina but the test is not decting it in that area.

You don’t mention the typing of the positive swab – was it HSV 1 or HSV 2?
The Igg test misses 30% of HSV 1 infections so he could be infected and the test didn’t pick it up.
You say that you’ve been HSV 1 positive for 10 years and have had two cold sores. Had you received oral sex prior to 10 years ago? The IgG test misses 8% of HSV 2 infections compared to the blot, so it could have missed an HSV 2 infection. Yes, the blot would clear this all up, but let me know the type of the positive swab test.
It isn’t possible that it is a new infection for both of you – that makes no sense.Terri

In November of 2021, I was tested for HSV1(56) & HSV2(.91). In January of 2022, I developed a sore on my vagina & the Dr swab it and it came back positive for HSV2. Then 1 week later, I tested again with the IGG test and the HSV 2 was .91 again. Which test is accurate? Should I still do the Western Blot test to determine my results? Did I get it from my partner?

Yes, I have performed oral sex and received oral sex after being diagnosed with HSV1. I never performed oral when a cold sore outbreak occurred.
