long story short, been with the same lady for 8 years, recently married. 2 partners my entire life. two weeks ago had 5 little bumps that I thought was folliculitis, ended up culturing HSV1. have been on valtrax 1gram twice a day for 5 days now, total will be 10 days in the next 5 days. My question is can this spread to other areas of my body. I recently woke up after sleeping and my penis was laying on where the site is. I am super paranoid that this will spread. Im almost positive this is my first OB. thanks

also if I masterbate, can this lead to further spreading?

Masturbation will not spread the virus. The virus now lives in the whole set of nerves that innervate the entire boxer shorts area. Outbreaks can show up anywhere between your waist and the middle of your thigh. If that happens, outside of the penis area, it is not because you spread it but rather the virus simply traveled on a different nerve to get to the surface of the skin. Normally, HSV one genital infection recurs infrequently. Usually it is obtained from receiving oral sex from someone who is infected orally. During the first four months of having a new infection with herpes it is wise to wash your hands with warm water and soap briefly after touching lesions to avoid infecting another part of your body. Once the virus is well established, it would be extremely unusual to transfer the virus to a new location.

You say infrequently do you have a statistic? What do you think the chances are this will occur on my penis since it’s a few inches below my belly button? Is waking up with my penis on one of the lesions a big concern of spresding? Is the shedding rate the same as it is on the gentials? I’m just curious and concern I still want to be sexual with my wife just taking all the precautions. How long should one wait till the lesions are healed to have sex again. Will sleeping on my stomach do anything thank you

HSV 1 recurs about once every other year, after the first year of having the infection. It could show up on your penis, yes, and even if you never have an outbreak genitally, it is shed even without symptoms on the penis, but is shed on about 15 days of the year. How you sleep has nothing to do with anything here. It might be good to get your wife tested – if she is also infected or has ever had a cold sore, there is almost no worry about transmission to a new location on her body.

Ok thank you. Anyway to know when it is safe to have sex again after the lesions have healed? So it can pop up anywhere on the area of boxer shorts?? And does it usually not go past midline like shingles or that doesn’t matter? Its alot to take in. I know my wife has never had a cold sore and shes been faithfully. I will have her get test best way is by blood? Thanks again

Also what I meant by sleeping habits are lesions actively congatious always or just when they are new for me as well as others. Didnt want to lay on anything all night with the chance of spreading. Not sure how this all works but getting a better idea

No, shedding only occurs from very thin skin like the shaft of your penis or the area around the anus. Outbreaks on the other hand, can occur anywhere in the boxer shorts area. There is no need to be concerned about your body getting virus on sheets or something you sleep on. That is not how this virus is transmitted. you ask when it is safe to have sex after the lesions heal and unfortunately we don’t have a firm answer for that. Viral shedding can occur at anytime even when there are no symptoms at all.
You say that you are certain this is the first outbreak but five grouped blisters doesn’t necessarily sound like a first outbreak to me. It could be but normally with an adult who has never been infected with herpes type one to get new genital infection, I would expect more symptoms. You mentioned that you been with the same partner for eight years– Have you recently been with someone new? If know, and this is the first infection, that it has to be from your wife. Right? The IgG tests for HSV one misses 30% of infections so even if she is negative, she could be infected.

No I have been with my wife the last 8 years one other girl before her. I may of had another out break never noticed? Shes never had any visible outbreak either. No other symptoms for me other than being tired. Could the culture be wrong potentially? It was prob 7-10 after I thought it was folliculitis thst wasnt healing. I’ve had shingles before as well and this doesn’t cross midline. The shingles was a few inches above this current spots thanks

I do work in healthcare..not sure if that has anything to do with it. Direct patient contact. The location of it confuses me.

I guess I should say having folliculitis in the past, when I thought that’s what it was i did pick at it trying to get the hair out. Not sure if that made it worse prob yes. It’s been about 3.5 weeks since I noticed and they spots r almost healed altho thst left behind a deep reddish slightly purple scar. Is it normal for the spot to be painful if say boxers touch them. It was like when I had shingles every little move hurt assuming its attached to the nerve root?

Shingles? Just above this spot? And how was that diagnosed? I’m thinking this was not shingles but rather your HSV 1 infection
I do not believe that the culture was wrong,no.
You would not acquire HSV genitally from a patient,no – this is a sexually transmitted infection. You have posted 10 questions and paid for three – not sure how this got through but I won’t be answering any further questions unless you get current with your subscriptions.
