Hello,
Five days ago, a nightmare situation happened to me at a bar. I was outside on the patio having a cigarette with a friend, it was also dark outside. My friends brother arrives, and long story short, we ended up sharing cigarettes (we were sharing of 2 cigarettes between the three of us). I remember that the cigarettes was moistened on the filtered mouthpiece (eww), and we took several puffs over a 10 minute span. To my gut wrenching shock when we returned to the well lit interior bar, I then noticed he had what was clearly a herpes outbreak (yes, it’s been confirmed he has herpes, and he clearly has some moral issues). He had a grayish scab that ran from the top of his lip (didn’t touch lip itself), and had a shinier fresher looking “cut” on his nose with 3 recent scabs that resembled popped pustules next to the shiner on his nose. I immediately called him on this, because I have a young child who drinks out of my sodas when I’m not looking, and I have been in a monogamous relationship for several years. After realizing the situation I got myself into, I called my significant other and told her what had happened, clearly she wasn’t thrilled.
My question is that since this guy clearly had an active outbreak, and we shared a few cigarettes with wet filter (assumingly from him), how likely is it that I would have contracted herpes that this individual exposed me to? I did bite my tongue a day or two before this day (chomping gum at the gym), and I have a bad tendency to bite on my lip if my lips feel a little dry. Of course I am assuming the worst, and am in the proverbial dog house. I am also worried sick, as to someone having that audacity to put people at risk.
That night I did some reading and started taking 1,000. Mg of lysine. So I don’t know if this would somehow “mask” if I would have had an “outbreak” but didn’t because of the lysine.
I am assuming the worst, and don’t know what “phase” his outbreak was. I am at 5 days with no symptoms yet.

I have never heard of nor have I seen anyone contract HSV 1 from sharing a cigarette or joint or soft drink or utensils. I really don’t think you have anything to worry about here. Obviously if you develop a lesion of any kind, you should have it checked out. And I assume that you’ve tested negative for HSV 1 yourself?
