I did one of those at home STD tests and it recently started providing HSV 2 testing. I went ahead and did the finger prick, and sent the results off. This was not my first time with this test, and I have had HSV 1 for many, many, many years. My IGG level last true blood test was like 26 and my HSV2 was negative. I do not take any anti viral for the HSV1 and have never passed it to anyone.

I’ve only had one new partner this year, and we used protection. Naturally I opted to speak with a physician for the company I used, and he expressed that more than likely it was a false positive due to my HSV1. He recommended going to Quest and I did just that. Ive yet to hear my results, so im looking for some peace of mind.

Also, its been almost 4 weeks since the last partner, and they state they are clean. I have had absolutely no physical symptoms. I remember vividly my first OB with HSV1 and ive had absolutely none of that. The only thing ive experienced is I got a cold, no fever, with bronchitis after going to a club one night.

I’m just curious anyone with diagnosed HSV1 has ever tested positive for HSV2? Have any of you used the at home tests?

How accurate can an at home test be for a virus like HSV? I’d really love my results from quest but they just aren’t coming through.

Any advice or commentary would be great! Is it possible I contracted HSV2 from this brief encounter? Does HSV1 antibodies leak over into HSV2? Thanks so much.

I would never ever suggest anyone use these at home tests. I’ve seen way too many false positives on them. The problem is, we have no index value so we cannot evaluate how likely a false positive is.

If you have no symptoms and you sexual history doesn’t suggest a new HASV 2 infection, you need the western blot to sort this out. And yes, there can be cross reactivity with HSV 1 giving a false positive HSV 2.
