Hi Terri,
6 months ago I had protected sex with a questionable individual. A few weeks later I had very bad burning on side of groin, Perineum, and butt crack but visible lesions. Symptoms subsided after a week or two when I discovered jock itch cream. A month later the burning returned after a long car ride which continued for several days until I used lotrin again. I went to my local health clinic about questionable symptoms and they weren’t too concerned because I wasn’t having an outbreak. In my research I first thought I could have gov but discovering info about herpes really scared me. I went and had first IGG test which is 6 months after exposure and came back negative for 1 and 2 <.2. I’m trying to calm down but I recently experienced the butt chafing again so I’m going to the doctor tomorrow. I have several questions for you but the first is this:
Is it possible to transfer a genital infection to friends and family non-sexually? Through sharing drinks, or possibly going to the bathroom and forgetting to wash hands.
I’ve been driving myself crazy around people with washing my hands and hand sanitizer. My biggest fear is that I have a daughter who is 2 and a half who I take care of, change diapers etc. It’s getting to the point where I limit physical interaction with her.
Thank you very much

Here are my two additional questions:
I just got back from the doctor and they weren’t concerned about my current chafing in between my butt crack.
Question: I noticed a red dot on one of my cheeks near the crack that looked like a pimple or red marks I get sometimes. I noticed this before the chafing occurred and it started to disappear right as the chafing started. It didn’t hurt or itch or anything to the touch. If this were herpes, the chafing wouldn’t start after the dot is disappearing would it?
Question: My doctors and the people who administered my IGG test are suggesting that I let this go, and accept the results as negative since I’ve had no visible lesions. What would you suggest? I’m feeling better after all of this, and I just want to let go of this mental insanity.

I just wanted to add one more thing to my first post. Everytime my daughter gets diaper rash I freak out, and it’s really driving me nuts.

It sounds to me like you are dealing with a mild fungal infection. The little dot sounds nothing like herpes to me. Nothing you’ve posted sounds like herpes to me, actually. And good you were actually seen and evaluated – I would suggest that you trust that opinion and go back to normal interactions with your child.
I would agree that if your test is negative, that you accept that and move on with your life.

Thank you very much Terri,
You’ve really helped alieviate my anxiety. I just had a couple of quick follow up points:
1. One thing I forgot to put in was that 3 months after I had sex I got the worst uti/bladder infection of my life. It took three rounds of antibiotics to treat and finally went away when I was given cefadroxil. I didn’t mention this because the pain with urination I read about only lasts during an outbreak but this lasted for 3 months. Is this something I should be concerned about?

No, that is not something to be concerned about in terms of a herpes infection

Hi Terri,
Just wanted to post my last two questions and say thank you very much for all your replies and for the revisit the other day I really appreciate it.
Here’s my last two questions:
I’m finally getting over the fear of transmission to my child. Did you say correctly in the visit that you have never heard of a case where a parent could transmit hav by scratching themselves and then changing a diaper and applying lotion?
For my own cbt efforts should I be telling myself that there is no possible way I could infect my child? I have a daughter and I know a lot goes on down there so I don’t want to live my life freaking out every time she has something going on down there.

Had a couple more questions:
1. If there is no concern about passing it to a child in some way, how come people can auto-inoculate themselves?
2. My daughter has had two red dots on her butt that have been freaking me out. They looked like dots that were blood red, and open. Very small. The reason it freaked me out is because they were there one week and then healed after a bit, and then within a week came back. Her doctor said she thought they were papilla because when she pressed them they turned white which she indicated meant that they weren’t deep. If this were HSV would not open sores be painful? She hasn’t had any pain or itching. I was just freaking out because they came back.

Final question:
Since we last spoke I broke out in two sores in my mouth, and below my lip which has been leaking yellow pus and scabbed over. When I went to the doctor he said that the pimple looked like an infected hair follicle with staff, but agreed to swab the sores. She said it looked more like stress ulcers than a cold sore/herpes lesion. The lady who swabbed the sore did it between 48 and 72 hours. The results came back negative.
Is this a reliable testing window? I read online that the best time is 24-48 hours. The sore was open still and hurt when she swabbed it.

Just some additional timeline information:
I got the first sore in mouth on Sunday,
The nurse swabbed on Tuesday,
The next day the additional sore and infected pimple/hair follicle showed up. I went back to the doctor who thought that I shouldn’t be worried about the two new ones.Sorry about all the added info. This has been really frustrating with the return of the symptoms on my butt for which I’m on fluconazole which is helping, and then when I got those sores I really panicked.
I’m trying to accept the results. I believe the swab being negative is very positive in conjunction with my negative igg.

I did say that, most assuredly
For my own cbt efforts should I be telling myself that there is no possible way I could infect my child? I have a daughter and I know a lot goes on down there so I don’t want to live my life freaking out every time she has something going on down there.
Yes, you should be telling yourself there is no way you are going to infect your child.
1. If there is no concern about passing it to a child in some way, how come people can auto-inoculate themselves?
When someone has new herpes, they might not yet be aware that they have herpes and touch a lesion and touch some other vulnerable part of their body. But truly, autoinoculation is rare.

Sounds nothing like herpes to me

Hi Terri,
I forgot to ask you during our video chat. The pain/burning in my gluteal cleft, and on my penis head/pain during urination have been going on for about 4 weeks and it seems to get a little better and then come back.
If this were a herpes recurrence, would it last this long?
I’ve read they usually only last 7-10 days and that symptoms don’t come and and go.
Thanks

Hi Terri,
Just had a couple more questions.
1. I’ve read that you’ve never seen an indeterminate change to positive, if my last encounter was 8 months ago, would it be safe to assume that whatever answers I get on the blot will be definitive, and that if it’s indeterminate I can consider it negative?
2. Have you seen a lot of cases where people where causing themselves similar symptoms to herpes because of all the stress? Psychosomatic symptoms I think they’re called. My doctor thinks that may be what i’m doing to myself.

Correct

The guidelines from UW is that if you’ve not had sex in one year, you should consider the indeterminate a negative2. Have you seen a lot of cases where people where causing themselves similar symptoms to herpes because of all the stress? Psychosomatic symptoms I think they’re called. My doctor thinks that may be what i’m doing to myself.
Well, yes. Certainly. But what I see most often is people noticing very small symptoms that would normally have gone unnoticed but because herpes is a worry now, they get over- noticed, if you will, and attributed to herpes, which is often an error.Terri

Hi Terri,
Had a couple more questions.
1. Is it true that sharing utensils is not a method of transmission? When I eat ice cream with family we share spoons and I have a fear about possibly having a sore in my mouth and doing so.
2. Is it true that you’ve never heard of someone getting oral hsv 2 through only kissing?

3. Is it true that you and the other experts do not believe that hands are capable of transmitting the virus from one person to another?
